This entry is an essay written by Andrew Gryf Paterson, in relation to the expedition to Meilikkälä and Virolahti municipalties of South-eastern Finland, as the Finnish fieldwork within the collaborative project 'Abandoned Mystery' between 2-7th September 2012.

The article descripes the transdisciplinary artistic fieldwork, and focuses upon the derived connections between the search and foraging of wild plants and the local context of the Finnish WWII defence line that was constructured but never used in the Winter and Continuation War with the Soviet Union between 1940-44.

Abandoned Mystery was a Multi/Inter/Trans/Cross/Non-disciplinary Expedition pilot project on exploring the constitution of the phenomena of abandoned military sites of the European edges in the Baltic Sea area, including the western region of Latvia, Kaliningrad, and Eastern Finland. Abandoned Mystery was initiated by Natalia Borissova (RU/DE), Mindaugas Gapševičius (LT/DE) and Anna Karpenko (RU). It was produced by the Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists Association LTMKS (LT), in collaboration with Pixelache Helsinki (FI), NCCA Kaliningrad (RU), and Interdisciplinary Artist Group SERDE (LV).

The project was supported by Nordisk Kulturkontakt.
